Irish Wolfhounds

Seems no matter how hard we try to do everything right, no matter how much we care for and love our babies we just can’t get a break. Wendy had started whelping her litter at 1046pm Monday evening. Two of the expected 5 puppies were delivered still born. Concerned now for Wendy’s health and the health of the remaining litter. We took Wendy to two afterhour emergency hospitals. First afterhours hospital did not have a sonogram, second afterhours hospital did. Vet did locate one puppy and told us it was not moving and had no heart beat. So we had the vet do an x-ray because we were expecting 3 more puppies. Sadly the X-ray showed only the one puppy remaining. So it is with the deepest of deepest sorrow that we have had to accept that Wendy only had 3 puppies and all are dead. Vet also said that Wendy should not have any problems delivering the last puppy, no need for emergency surgery which we were very relieved to hear But with the disruption to her whelping of the litter she delivered the last angel at 710am Tuesday morning. We had Wendy to our personal vet right away for a check up and all is well physically unfortunately the emotional toll on Wendy has been difficult. Now into the 3rd day post whelping a beautiful litter of 3 angels Wendy has started to eat a little more and sleeping more soundly. Yesterday all three puppies were taken to our state lab for necropsy to try and determine the cause of death. We hope to have more information in a couple weeks. We will take Wendy back to our personal vet for a more probing exam and pull blood to send off. So as our beautiful and precious guardian angels make their way over rainbow bridge we can not be more devastated. Franky and Wendy produced 1 male 2 female, male was red brindle like Franky and the two female were both black in color. Beautiful puppies! Depending on the results of the necropsy and the exam done on Wendy we are going to try again to breed Franky to Wendy. If this happens we plan to breed Wendy again in November with litter due in January of 2015. Please say a prayer for our 3 little guardian angels and Beautiful Wendy who was a rock a source of strength and pride throughout. Rest assured she is being spoiled like no other and we expect her to make a full recovery from this.

Today Wendy’s temperature dropped to 98.3.  This means puppies will be whelped anytime up to 48 hours from now.   This is almost like waiting for Christmas morning.    If you don’t hear from us for a few days please don’t worry.  Things will naturally be chaotic here for a little bit and we will also need some time to catch up on sleep.   Please check for news and pictures soon.

Today we had Wendy into our vet to do an sonogram to see heart beats and possible count. Wendy was very patient while we probed her abdomen for signs of life. We got conformation of 5 puppies with a possibility of 7 puppies. All the puppies looked to be of good size and great looking hearts and heart beats. While we were looking for puppies one was very long and stretched out and appeared to be the largest. If a male we hope to give him a litter name of Stretch. Another puppy pawed at the screen (threw a paw out) which is a very strong trait from the mother side. So glad to see all of them doing so well we can hardly wait to say hi and love each and every one of them. Attached are a few pictures of Wendy in the whelping box today.

Whelping box is here and now assembled…Thank you so much Lisa and James!!!  It’s beautiful!!!   Some pictures of our whelping room and box.  I can imagine a row of puppies with noses and paws lined up across the top. Now to start filling it with soft quilts and sheets so Wendy can start nesting.

We hope she continues to do well from this point.  Paws crossed we don’t have any major hiccups.  Saturday at 10am is Wendy’s

Finally mom is off the computer!  Shhh don’t tell her.  I overheard mom talking to Aunt Lisa on the phone about a box and putting me in it!    Why is mom putting me in a box?  I have work to finish outside I’m preparing for my babies!  I have a nest (actually a hole) under the deck.  Not just any hole but one with additional holes like bedrooms.  If Aunt Lisa and mom put me in this box it better be fit for puppies…It needs to have Pink and Blue paw prints and the silhouettes of beautiful Wolfhounds on it.  Oh and above all it must be fit for Gods and Goddess!  Got to go…I hear her coming back…Shhh Not a BARK – I mean word.

Last night along with family and friends we had a wonderful time watching a live performance of the theatrical musical Because of Winn Dixie at the Rep. in Little Rock, AR. Phenomenal and very talented cast made 2 hours go by like a blink of the eye. The music was beyond awesome, so beautifully performed between the musical scores and acting we were thoroughly entertained.

Zion was part of our group and got her picture taken with just about all the cast along with the main stars of the show. Opel played by actor Julia Nightingale Landfair and the 2 Winn Dixies.   Just like Lassie, Winn Dixie’s role is shared by two beautiful Irish Wolfhounds.  Taran (Male) and Cally (Female). We actually got to visit them and their owner/trainers the Berloni’s, in their dressing room after the show…what a thrill. Watching a live performance really makes a difference if you don’t care for musical’s on TV or as a movie.

One other note: We were told that the show has been such a wonderful success at the Rep (Arkansas Repertory Theater) they are extending the show another week. So those of you that live in and around Little Rock, AR and you want to do something different… highly recommend you see this show.
